What is the Camino Francés?

The Camino Francés, the French Way, begins near the border of France and Spain in the French village of St-Jean-Pied-de-Port. On it’s way to Santiago de Compostela, this inland route passes through multiple villages with plenty of places to stay, eat, and refresh. The route also visits some larger cities and municipalities. On either end of the Camino Francés are hilly climbs and descents, while the middle way is flat and vast. Summer is the busiest time of year when westerners take their holiday. Some do bits every summer for a week or two, while others walk all the way through to Santiago in a month or more. I walked the Camino Francés to Santiago and then on to Finisterre at the Atlantic ocean.  I left in mid-September and returned home in late-October, 2013 (7 weeks). I stayed extra days in cities to explore and walked under the average sixteen miles a day it would typically take to finish in a month’s time. The distance from St-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago is approximately 800 km (500 mi).
